Description: The Process
Teams have 2 hours to plan the construction of a log cabin. It must be finished in six weeks and so, armed with a Gantt chart and details of labour capabilities and costs, suppliers and the tasks that need doing, teams plan the project.
It is important the walls are built before you put the roof on; preparation of the ground is best done at the start and you need to check that deliveries will arrive just in time. Oh, and you have to stay in the black throughout the project - and you need to plan for wet days. Apart from that it is plain sailing!
Once teams have completed their planning schedule, filled out their order form and taken on the necessary staff the plans are quickly analysed by computer and a 5-page report printed for each team. This gives a score out of 100 and you have to achieve 80% to be in with a chance of winning the contract.
The project planning business game is an excellent introduction to:
project planning skills (work scheduling, cash flow, use of resources, costing)
setting objectives and priorities
team briefing and checking understanding
contingency planning
teamwork for a planning team
