Description: The Process
Though this is a tabletop exercise, the context is that teams are let loose in the Scottish Highlands. Each team has to organise an expedition and have a budget of £500 to purchase equipment, pay ferry crossings, accommodation, other resources and information.
Effective management of information, recognising constraints, managing time and working within a budget are some of the essential skills required to achieve the task.
This popular Northgate Training activity involves the use of an Ordnance Survey map and a computer, which if interrogated properly will give details about distances, times, costs, etc. A number of different routes are possible but there are only a few combinations that maximise points. The results are analysed by a computer to produce a winning team.
This leadership training activity is ideal for an assessment centre before recruiting staff. It is used on graduate induction courses and all types of management programmes where leadership, decision making and teamwork are a focus.
The following issues are covered in this activity:
managing information
setting clear objectives
making the most of resources
managing a budget
establishing and sharing the complete task with the group
strategic planning
the benefits of delegation
decision making
leadership skills
the importance of teamwork
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
